Build a list in a particular niche and tell them stories. Create a bond. Build a relationship with them. It's important. Then, when you've created a bit of culture, start marketing affiliate products or services to them that you think they might like. Just be sure that you personally vet out whatever it is that you're selling to avoid complaints if the product or service falls short.
I launched that in October of 2008, and that very first month I sold that book for $19.99. I sold it in a way where people could come to the site, purchase it and, immediately after, the book, which was simply a pdf file I had written, was directly digitally delivered through an email to them. And as a result of that payment, it was just money into my Paypal account. That first month, I made $7,008.55. That was just life-changing for me.
Of course, you can make honst money in Internet info-products, or affiliate marketing, or other such areas where people tend to get drawn to "passive income" fantasies. But, to make real money over the sustainable long-haul, you must treat these like any other business. In other words, you must provide real value to real customers with a real need.
Finally, market your available photos. Get active in photography forums, social networks, guest posting about photography will help you a lot. You probably aren’t going to get rich selling photos online, but you can earn some extra cash passively. Say you earn $1 per month for every image listed and if you have 50 images available for sale, you may be earning around $50 per month.
I say almost because in truth you still need to do something in order to keep sales coming through. That something is usually write new content to keep the blog active. Without activity, eventually the flow of traffic will cease. It might take a long long time, especially for blogs in a high authority position with firm rankings in the search engines, but eventually, a blog with no new content stream will die…at least I think it will (I often wonder whether a blog like Steve Pavlina’s would ever die given the eternal nature of his blog posts – I think the search engines and all those incoming links might continue to send him traffic for a long, long time).

Affiliate marketing is the practice of partnering with a company (becoming their affiliate) to receive a commission on a product. This method of generating income works the best for those with blogs and websites. Even then, it takes a long time to build up before it becomes passive. Clickbank is particularly noteworthy because in many cases you can even earn 50% to 75% of the product revenue. However, most affiliate programs will offer commissions between 5% and 10%. In order to maximize your income, promote products that have are expensive. For example, a $1,000 product with a 5% commission will earn you a decent $50 commission.
And speaking of not selling to everyone, don’t try to create products that are trying to speak to everyone. Don’t be afraid to get specific. For example, I’m no longer buying “how to make money blogging” courses that are meant to include beginners. Why? Because I can count on 75% of the content, if not more, to be about things I’ve already done – buying a domain, setting up hosting, setting up this, that and the other thing. I’m spending money on things specifically created for people at my stage of the game. And guess what? That creates a lot of opportunity for you in creating additional courses! You can create one for the beginner, intermediate and advanced user. That's a lot of income potential.

eBooks – My 7-day series could easily have been offered as a eBook for sale as opposed to subscriber bait, but my main objective at that point was getting people into my community long-term where maybe I can offer them a more extensive eBook on just one of those work-at-home opportunities a few weeks or months down the road. At that point they have seen a little of what I have to offer and are hopefully liking what they have seen enough to take the next step of becoming a customer.

However, depending on the policy, an individual receiving residual, rather than total, disability benefits may receive a reduced benefit or no benefit at all if her monthly income exceeds a certain percentage of pre-disability income. In some policies, in order to qualify for residual disability benefits you must first qualify for a period of total disability. You can purchase a stand-alone residual policy, known as an income replacement policy, or a total disability policy with residual coverage as a rider. The income replacement policy is generally less expensive than the total disability policy.
It might all seem pedantic but I think the words we use to describe things are important. And calling a business passive when it really isn’t can set people up for disappointment and even failure. It’s not a fair description of the work involved. Sure, you might be able to lounge on a beach as money rolls in but only after you’ve put in many hours of work first and only with the knowledge that you’ll have to sit back down at the computer again at some point to invest further in your business.
PS Joel also throws up the whole coaching idea in this book, and whilst it’s not at all passive I just wanted to mention it, because this is one of the ways to create a six-figure business for yourself if you are a true expert in an arena. ie you can use passive income info products (that generate say $30,000 a year) to pull in the customers for your 1-1 or mastermind style coaching service (that brings in say $100,000+ a year).
